The Minnesota Constitution guarantees a public education as a fundamental right. The Save Indus Group believes that the students of Northern Koochiching County deserve to attend their local school just like all other Minnesota students. Closing Indus School was neither practical nor necessary. We respect the Court of Appeals, and we will carefully review their ruling to determine our next course of action.
A new Non--Profit, established and organized after the closure of the Indus School. Our mission is to advocate for our students, staff, and community now and into the future. Our goal is to reopen the school whether public or charter. If it is not deemed viable I.C.E.D. will continue our mission by supporting the neighboring districts that educate our children, as well as supporting community programs that benefit our children.

My dog was just about out of dog food. I went to raiseright.com and bought an e-gift card for $80 from Chewey (he needed a toy too). I went to Chewey.com ordered the dog food, used the e-gift card I just bought and wah lah. I earned $4.00 for I.C.E.D. (2 days later my dog has his food ...and a toy:) Vickie

For generations, the Indus School has provided area students with quality education, life skills, and a support system.
On March 8th, 2023, the ISD #363 School Board deemed our school unnecessary and voted (4-2) to close the Indus School.
The Indus School's impending closure has wide-reaching effects beyond a "standard" K-12 education.
Indus School serves an essential niche in the northern Minnesota school system.
Many rural families depend on the Indus School for education for their children.
More students have the opportunity to participate in school clubs, such as Student Council, National Honor Society, Yearbook Club, etc. And not only participate, but perform leadership roles in these clubs.
At the Indus School, each student feels seen and heard. There are no strangers at Indus!
Save Indus is a grassroots advocacy group made up of students, parents, alumni, local business leaders, and concerned citizens.
We believe in the impact the Indus School has on the lives of our students, staff, families, and community.
Thanks to all that stopped by!
Letter to the editor / letter to the community:
Many may be asking: Why is the Indus community fighting so hard to keep the Indus School open? We write this letter to explain.
ISD #363 took the unprecedented action of closing a school in three months. In that time, it failed to do any due diligence in making sure the Indus students educational needs would be met and failed to answer even the most basic questions from the Indus staff and community. In fact, by acting so quickly in closing the school, open enrollment deadlines were missed.
When presented with information that Indus is in fact viable, as well as offers to seek alternatives from legislators and community members, ISD #363 simply dismisses the options, with literally NO discussion by the school board on the viability of any of the options presented. Community members have only been able to speak for 3 minutes at a time at board meetings, and the board has neglected to follow up these concerns with a response.
So far, the only communication the families of Indus students received from the ISD #363 was after the closure. A letter was sent to parents stating that Indus students can be bussed to Northome, a 2+ hour bus ride or can enroll in neighboring school districts. No parent in their right mind would bus their child 2+hours one way to a school, going through two other districts to get there. Any reasonable parent will open enroll their students in the closer districts. It is clear the ISD #363 intended, and is in fact counting on this happening. No preplanning with other districts or the community occurred. By closing so quickly and not caring about this impact, ISD#363 has left the educational needs of our kids to neighboring school districts, who may not have the resources or the ability to bus or educate them. While our neighboring districts have been supportive, ISD#363 has left our neighboring districts to pick up the pieces with minimal time to plan for an influx.
When you also consider that our county tax dollars will go to fix and fund the Northome School, when it is Impractical and unreasonable for our kids to even attend, this literally leaves the Indus community with nothing but the bill. We are left to fend for ourselves in trying to find viable alternatives to educate our children, while our tax dollars are being spent by a district unwilling to do so. Meanwhile the school board proposed and voted to keep all the sparsity aid that was intended for both schools.
The district has not communicated plans for the Indus school building, which generations of residents have spent their lifetime supporting through their tax dollars. In fact, ISD #363 has even started to cannibalize (strip/dismantle) the Indus School by taking items out, without taking an inventory or communicating its intentions.
Northome to date has not bothered to communicate what will happen to the Indus School scholarships and student raised monies. An example: Indus school students raised money from the Indus community for their 2024 Prom, and Scholarships were set up by Indus school community members for its graduates. Why won’t they tell us what will happen to this funding? This is not right in any sense.
The actions of ISD #363 have shown that they want all resources from our community, but do not want the burden of providing an education to our children. They acted selfishly and irresponsibly, and we the Indus community are facing the consequences of it. We will
not stand by and let this happen.
These are the reasons we continue this fight! For our kids, our community and the Indus Staff.
